Type of Breast Imaging
In general, for an average risk woman (no family history and no genetic mutation), breast cancer screening begins at the age of 40 with annual mammography.
If you are having any symptoms such as breast pain, breast mass/lump, nipple discharge, then Dr. Son may recommend additional imaging with either ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram, or MRI.
If you are a high-risk patient then Dr. Son may recommend alternating imaging with MRI and mammography. A high-risk patient is anyone who has greater than 20% lifetime risk of having breast cancer based on a comprehensive risk assessment calculator.
